Resource Centers

Do you need an idea for a special troop event? Looking for resource materials for loan such as leather stamps, hula skirts or a parachute? Are you having trouble coming up with activities to help you teach teambuilding, or to boost self-esteem or cooperation? Has girl planning got you stumped and frustrated?Your Volunteer Resource Centers are here to help you locate the resources you need to spice up your troop activities. If you have a need that you don’t see listed, please call and ask for help –that’s why we’re here.

What kind of help is available?

• Meeting / Activity Space
  Troops may use space free of charge in either volunteer resource center on weekdays for regular troop meetings (2 hour limit), if space is available. In return for this privilege, you must leave the meeting space and bathrooms clean and perform 2 service projects each year for the site. Meeting space reservations may be made for the upcoming school year beginning each July. Special events and Overnights require the normal fee. A Troop Meeting Space Agreement form must be completed and approved by the building reservations staff person to reserve meeting space in either resource center.   Our resource specialist can help you locate ideas, program outlines, information, specialized supplies, etc.. Give her a call or email and/or make an appointment to come by the Newark center for hands-on help.
  

• Materials & Kits to Loan
  In addition to a large library of books and videos, we have lots of kits and materials available for loan. Just a few are listed below. The resource specialist can also forward information / materials from Newark to the Peninsula Resource Center for pick-up or (in some cases) arrange for mail / shipping.

Check-out Kits Available

Check-out kits at each campground are also available for leaders who wish to facilitate their own program activities on or off site.

In the Salisbury area, contact Jackie Duncan at 410-742-5107 or jduncan@cbgsc.org to reserve a kit.

Babysitting 101 – designed to be facilitated by a troop adult. This is a video and workbook based course. Your kit includes a video and leaders’ guide (video must be returned) and well as a workbook and patch for each girl. Contact the Newark Resource Center to reserve this kit. Ages 11-14, $7 per girl.

Five A Day Kit – Developed in cooperation with the Produce for Better Health Foundation The kit contains songs, games and activities to promote healthy eating habits. Gr. K-5 (older girls often check out this kit to facilitate programs for younger troops). Available in both the Newark and Salisbury Resource Centers. Cost $3.50 per girl includes patch and cookbook for each girl.

Parachute Games – Colorful parachutes are available for parachute games, instruction booklet included. Available in both the Newark and Salisbury Resource Centers.
All ages, $5 rental fee.

Princess Zip – Healthy Eating for princesses! This program is provided by the beef council and includes a booklet, crown and patch for each girl and a guide for the leader. Program involves putting on a skit – reader’s theater style. Girl love it! Available in both the Newark and Salisbury Resource Centers. Gr. 4-6, Cost: FREE!

Zink the Zebra – Zink, the story of a spotted Zebra, is the basis for understanding how it feels to be different. This patch program has been designed to give girls a sense of awareness of and appreciation for individual differences; foster compassion and respect for others; practice life skills of positive interaction and an opportunity for community service. Zink the Zebra was created by an 11 year old Girl Scout fighting cancer, Kelly Weil. This program grew out of a commitment to see that Kelly’s insights on being a child with cancer yielded benefits to other children through important lessons on acceptance, respect and understanding for others who are” different.” Warm friendly stuffed beanie zebras are a tangible reminder of the program.
All ages, 2 – 3 hours depending on age level. Deposit of $25 required for kit which includes 2 videos, a stuffed Zink, a puppet Zink, and a book. Deposit will be returned when complete kit is returned. The Zink Girl Package (Zink beanie and patch) can be purchased at the Bay Shop.

Science Program Kits - sponsored by Agilent:

Hands-on kits provided by Agilent Technologies are available to adults who have completed training. These science activities apply to Girl Scout awards and are great for troop projects and service unit events. To arrange for training or to reserve kits, contact Carlyn Nelson at cnelson@cbgsc.org or (302) 456-7150.

Kits are $5 per troop - any number of girls. You keep the kits!

Deep Sea Divers - explore the principles of flotation, air pressure and density as you build and test your own "deep sea diver."

Kalimba - explore the fundamentals of sound through the vibration of metal and wood as you build your own "thumb piano."

Catch a Thief - you'll apply investigative and problem solving skills to solve a crime using paper chromatography and ink analysis on a random note.

Quiz Board - use electronic circuits and electrical flows to build your own electronic matching game.

Steady Hand - build a game made of an electronic circuit complete with light and switch and then amaze your family and friends with this game requiring steady hands.

Newton's Rocket Car - assemble and race a balloon powered rocket car.

Owl Pellets - dissect owl pellets to discover the eating habits of these fascinating birds of prey.

Special Programs:

The Real Game Series– a hands-on and interactive life skills program which uses role play to build and reinforce the importance of The High Five principles of life/work development:

5. Access Your Allies

Participation helps girls to build and reinforce a positive self-concept, relate school experience to career choices; practice teamwork, decision making, problem solving and communication skills and to understand how the local community fits into the global community. These programs require consecutive meetings, a day long or weekend event type arrangements. Please note the # sessions required, some may be condensed.

Choose From:
The Play Real Game – Developed for grades 3-4, Theme: Living and working in a community. Girls create neighborhoods, find jobs, work together as town citizens to accomplish a worthwhile goal. Fun with maps and role play. Ten 1- hour sessions. $8 per girl includes patch and materials.

The Make It Real Game – Developed for Grades 5-6, Theme: Working in a small company involved in international business. Take a simulated journey into the global economy while reinforcing the importance of teamwork and cooperation. Role-playing as adults, each with a unique history, girls form artistic production companies that research, develop and rehearse a special presentation and then deliver it to a live audience. Twelve 75 minute sessions, $10 per girl includes patch and materials.

The Real Game – Developed for Grades 7-8, Theme: Making ends meet and prospering in adult life and work. Girls explore adult realities such as taxes, living expenses, workplace environments and unexpected emergencies. Role playing as adults in randomly assigned occupational roles, they learn how schoolwork relates to occupational choices and therefore, to lifestyle and income. Delves into the importance of a balanced lifestyle, adaptability, job transitions and satisfaction in work. Eighteen 75 minute sessions, $10 per girl includes patch and materials.

Library Books

These are located at the Newark and PRC offices. To check out a library book, simply come in to your nearest service center, select your book and fill out the library card in the back of the book. Bring this card to the receptionist. You may check out more than one book at a time. Each book must be returned to the Receptionist within two weeks of the checkout date. Failure to return books in good condition will result in the group being charged a replacement fee for the item.

Flags and stands - International, Council, State, WAGGGS and USA flags. Miniature desktop sets (2-8 flags). Limit of 10 international flags per rental.
$5 Usage fee

Leather Stamping Tools - Mallets, stamps, stain, and sealer for leather stamping projects. Set for one $5 usage fee.

Parachute - Nylon parachute for use in team building games and programs (All age levels)
$2 usage fee

Potato Sacks - Burlap bags for sack races. Set of 10. $5 usage fee.

Sewing Machines - 4 machines available for group sewing projects. $5 usage fee.

Snow Cone Machine - Make snow cones for your next carnival or troop celebration. $5 usage fee.
