2009 National Young Women of Distinction


Who can apply?

Applications are open to any Girl Scout who received her Girl Scout Gold Award between January 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. There is no limit on the number of applications a council or overseas committee can submit. Councils must complete the verification form attached to the application.

When is the application due?

Applications must be postmarked by August 14, 2009 to Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, Inc. 501 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE 19713, Attention: Renee Naughton.

Why should you apply?

Girl Scouts who receive the YWOD honor receive many benefits including a college scholarship, an invitation to a Girl Scout national meeting where the YWOD are honored, the opportunity to join the National Girl Consultants (NGC), and the opportunity to join the National Young Women of Distinction Alumnae Association.

How many young women will be selected and when will they be notified?

Ten (10) young women will be selected. They will be notified no later than December 31, 2009.

Where will the awards ceremony be held?

The 2009 YWOD will be honored at the National Corporate Leadership Meeting scheduled for Friday February 26th-Saturday February 27th. Honorees are expected to attend an event from Thursday February 25th through Sunday February 28th 2010. Travel, food and lodging will be paid by GSUSA.

What do the honorees do after they receive the award?

The 2009 YWOD will join the National Girl Consultants, a national advisory group to GSUSA composed of girls ages 14-18. The National Girl Consultants hold 1 year terms (January 2010-December 2010), subject to extension and are expected to attend an in person meeting (August 2010) and participate in various teleconferences and webinars while partnering with GSUSA staff and the National Board of Directors to influence decision-making processes in Girl Scouting.
