Girl Scouts to Open “Green” Building

March 19, 2009

Newark, DE – The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, Inc. will hold a Grand Opening of Camp Country Center's new Science and Technology Lodge on Saturday, April 18, 2009. The Lodge is built with “green” aspects in mind, and the Earth Day themed opening will reflect that. The day will begin at 9:00 am with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Lodge, followed by guided tours of both the new building and other parts of the camp. The tours will explain the different green aspects of the Lodge, as well as the effort and planning that went into creating it.

The Lodge is targeting a Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating, and the certification is in process. The LEED program provides standards for determining the sustainability of the building and its construction. The Lodge would be the first building in Delaware to obtain Platinum-level certification.

The Lodge incorporates many different environmentally-friendly features. The building is constructed with a high percentage of recycled materials, and during the building process, paints and sealants with low VOC content were used. The building is energy efficient, with good insulation to keep the building warm in winter, and a reflective metal roof to keep it cool in summer. The metal roof also has the benefit of a longer lifespan than asphalt shingles. There are also cisterns around the building to collect rainwater from the roof, in order to use it for irrigation.

Earth Day activities and programs for families will be held from 1-2:30 pm. Parking is available at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, and shuttle service from there to camp will be provided.  If you would like to attend, please cal the Development Office at 302-778-0293. More information on the event can be found on the Council’s website www.GSCB.org.

A leading advocate for and expert on girls, the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council builds girls of courage, confidence and character by providing personal leadership development and programs that teach skills for the real world.  To learn more about Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, Inc., visit www.GSCB.org or call 1-800-341-4007.
